Understanding self-improvement: Why do you need to develop a self-care routine?

Our body is a temple, and we always want to be the best version of ourselves. A daily routine is crucial because it can lead us to success. Nothing is more important than setting aside time to improve our overall health. As a gentleman, this is even more important because it determines our value in society. These include relationships, self-confidence, and job opportunities. After all, our physical and mental health has to be maintained to achieve more extraordinary things in life. Society judges us harshly when we have poor self-care. These are some of the daily routines I recommend and how they have impacted my life.

1. Facial care

Facial care is an essential routine for a gentleman. I always wash my face every day, sometimes even several times daily. I also shave or maintain a healthy beard. I recommend an excellent facewash product like Tiege Hanley. It cleanses your face and brushes all the dust collected throughout the day. It opens up your pores and allows your skin to take a deep breath. It also has a skin defoliating gel that cleans off the dead skin on your face. Its aloe vera face wash helps moisturize and rejuvenate your skin. You will be surprised when you do this. Your acne will go away. It also improves dry skin.

At night, I primarily use a skin moisturizer to help retain fluids in my skin. On top of that, I also use an SPF facial cream every morning before leaving my house. This helps to protect your skin from sun damage. Actinic keratoses are dry and rough skin that is formed by sun exposure. It is a precursor to skin cancer such as squamous cell carcinoma, and therefore it is even more critical to protect your skin with an excellent facial routine. 2. Exercise and personal fitness

Physical fitness promotes a healthy lifestyle. This includes prepping a portion-sized meal, choosing healthy foods, and going to the gym three to five times weekly. Exercise has tremendous benefits when it comes to health. The endorphin and serotonin being released during and after exercise have many benefits. It reduces anxiety, promotes longevity, and leads to better performance at work. In the era of the modern world, there are gyms everywhere, and everyone can take advantage of them. They are inexpensive, and they open 24 hours every day. I go to the gym three to five times every week. I incorporate both cardio and strength training. My fitness goal is to be physically fit to continue my busy life as a physician. I aim to eat healthy with a diet mixed with plenty of vegetables and fruits. I also aim to have 10,000 to 20,000 steps every day. I track my progress with my Apple watch. If I am behind with my efforts, I either go to the gym or walk outside until I reach my goals. All these small changes to your lifestyle will become noticeable once you have accomplished them in an extended amount of time.

3. Meditate and plan

Meditation helps you to focus. We should all have clear and achievable goals in our subconscious minds. However, if you do not make it a priority to meditate and make a conscious effort to define those goals, you will most likely not achieve them. I spent at least 15 to 30 minutes every morning meditating. I made sure my environment was quiet, and I thought about goals that I would like to achieve in the future. I separate my goals into short and long-term goals. Short-term goals are goals that I can accomplish within one to two weeks. I then think about actionable plans. On the other hand, long-term goals are goals that I want to achieve in three to five years or longer. For example, my goal is to become a cardiologist. That is my long-term goal. I have to study for the Internal Medicine board exam to reach this goal. I need to spend two hours studying daily between my usual clinical duties to pass the board exams. You get the idea.

Organize your hours using a calendar, a physical one, or an electronic one. I use Google Calendar as it is widely available and is easy to assess. I also plan my weeks so I know exactly what I need to do every day. You should also plan your days ahead of time. You will only be successful if you work and know precisely what is happening every hour.

4. Learn something every day

Last but not least, you should aim to learn something every day. Either learn on your job, or you actively seek new knowledge in your free time. It is no excuse not to learn as much as you can in the modern age. Knowledge is free, and you do not need to pay for courses online to obtain different skill sets. I joke with my residents, “there is always Youtube University.” It is so true that we can learn everything on Youtube. If you want to start a business in affiliate marketing, there are thousands of videos to teach you how to do that. If you are interested in gardening your food, some channels teach you about agriculture. I spend about two to three hours daily seeking knowledge- I learn about finances, aquariums, nature, and investments. We live in a generation with an overwhelming amount of information. It is up to you to identify what you want to learn and how to use that information.
