Discipline is the cornerstone of success, and it is one of the skills you must master in life. It is the most important skill discussed by wealthy individuals. In this era, everyone enjoys instant gratification. On the internet, you see advertisements on how to get rich quickly. People sell you courses, services, and products to promote unrealistic expectations. However, good things do take time to develop. And you must learn how to stay consistent and learn from failures. It is no secret that billionaires talk about how much time they spend working. Most of them start with a high-income skill, which translates into a scalable business and passive income. I met many successful individuals throughout my career- both in the academic and business setting. They all share common characteristics. And it is these characteristics that set them apart from the rest of the world. Here are some tips you can start doing today to build a brighter future.
1. Get up early in the morning.

All successful people wake up early in the morning. Exceptions don’t make the rules. People like Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Warren Buffet all share the same routine in the morning. They wake up early to work. It not only helps with productivity but also helps you to become disciplined. In the morning, distractions are at their minimum. You can read the news, work on your side hustles, and finish any projects. You also have time to meditate and plan your day. During an interview, Elon Musk states that he wakes up at 7 am every morning. Steve Jobs, on the other hand, wakes up at 6 am. They both start working as soon as they wake up, and they do not linger in bed browsing social media. Similarly, most physicians wake up at 6 to 7 am, preparing for their day at work. When noon comes, we would have accomplished most of our tasks for the day, while most people are just waking up. Start waking up early, and grab yourself a coffee. You will see a difference.
2. Spend an hour daily meditating and studying.

It would be best if you incorporate a learning routine into your schedule. Interestingly, most people don’t read another book after finishing college. It amazes me how little time we dedicate ourselves to learning. In medicine, we emphasize the value of lifelong learning. Because the field of medicine is so expansive, learning medicine is similar to drinking out of a fire hydrant. And if you don’t have the drive to learn, your journey to becoming a physician will be very difficult. In reality, you should always strive to learn something new every day, albeit a new skill for a side hustle, or learn how to perfect your daily routines. I have spent two hours daily learning new skill sets for the past ten years. Recently, I have been interested in keeping houseplants. I took a MasterClass online to garden, grow, and prune houseplants. Unlike the old days, knowledge is now free. You have many resources like YouTube, MasterClass, and SkillShare that can teach you invaluable skills. And you do not have a pay a dime. It is up to you if you can translate these skills into a high-income career. In medical school, I spent countless hours studying using YouTube, and it has proven to be an invaluable asset for me.
3. Plan your days ahead.

Planning is one of the essential methods of becoming disciplined. If you do not have a clear goal in mind, you will not be able to make small steps to reach that goal. Use electronic calendars and planners to your advantage. Write down all of your meetings, appointments, and everything you need to do on the calendar. And then execute these tasks no matter what happens during the day. In one of the interviews conducted by CNBC, Michelle Obama talked about how important planning was for her to run several political campaigns. She needed a calendar to stay organized and efficient. Similarly, I like to use the Apple Calendar as it is the most widely available application on your devices. It syncs all of my meetings from the computer to my phone. It also automatically sets up reminders and sends me a message 10 minutes before the session starts. In my experience, most successful individuals plan every hour of their day. This ensures their efficiency, so they are not wasting time. It will also give you positive reinforcement and make you feel good about yourself after completing these tasks.
4. Automate your daily routines and enjoy the journey.

Decision fatigue can lead to poor performance, anxiety, and mental breakdown. The lack of mental capacity will be the biggest hurdle in completing your daily tasks. As a result, it is critical to automate your daily routines. So you do not need to make several hundreds of small decisions every day. For example, I always wake up at 6 am, brush my teeth, shower, have a facial routine, go to the gym, drink a coffee, write a blog post, and answer emails, in that order. I seldom change my habit, and I have been following this pattern of practices for the past decade. This has helped me tremendously to become who I am today. If I had to choose what to do in the morning on a daily basis, I would not have the mental capacity to pursue my career goals and business. Overall, being disciplined is not an easy task. It takes a lot of effort and strong will. But with minor changes to your habit, everyone can become successful.
