Understanding nature: Top 5 beginner plants you should buy

Having houseplants in your living spaces can boost your physical and mental health. One of the most common concerns for most plant owners is that they think it is challenging to keep them alive.  However, you can have a green thumb with proper plant care, such as a routine watering schedule and picking the right beginner plant. If you have questions about watering your plants properly, please feel free to visit my other blog posts. Many plants are drought-resistant and can tolerate the abuse from a beginning houseplant keeper. Here are five common houseplants that are easy to keep that can make your living spaces more lively.

1. The Golden Pothos

The golden pothos is one of the most readily available plants that are very easy to keep. Its heart shape and vining nature make the golden pothos an attractive plant to most owners. Interior designers often use the golden pothos on planters that hang on walls to improve the color contrast of furniture and kitchen appliances. The golden pothos is drought tolerant, and it is very prolific. It does not have a specific water requirement. I have had success using tap water and water them thoroughly every week. It is one of the most common plants used in the hang-on-the-back filter for the freshwater aquarium. It is easy to root in water and absorb most of the nutrients in the water.

2. The Monstera Deliciosa (the Swiss-Cheese plant)

The monstera deliciosa is one of my favorite house plants. It is exquisite and easy to grow. Its swiss cheese pattern and slits between the body of the leaves give its name. In the wild, they produce delicious fruit, hence the name deliciosa. They also grow in monstrous sizes and can be as tall as 6-8 feet if allowed to grow in a proper size pot. However, you will need to provide abundant light for the slit pattern to expand on the leave.  Plants without sufficient sunlight will resemble the heart-shaped patho leaves. It is also not picky with its watering requirement and is quite drought-tolerant. You will be pleased to try the monstera deliciosa plant.

3. The String of Turtles (Peperomia prostrata)

Unlike the pathos and the monstera, the string of turtle is a primary vining plant that grows out of its pot. It is often placed in a hanging basket and allows its vines to grow down like a curtain. It is a type of peperomia, as suggested by its name. Therefore, it is a type of succulent plant, and it is also drought tolerant. Water this plant thoroughly once every two weeks will be sufficient. The string of turtle has a unique pattern that resembles the back of a box turtle. It is adorable and has an elegant look to the plant when vined. Along with its cousins, the string of pearls and the string of hearts, they will all satisfy your taste in plant-keeping.

4. The Ficus Elastica (the Rubber plant)

The ficus elastica, also known as the rubber plant, is a trendy plant for excellent reasons. It is elegant and has shiny and rubbery leaves that gave its name. The plant is straightforward to keep, and it can get quite large. It can grow up to 6 to 8 feet tall if provided with the light and potting soil.  The plant has different variations, such as the variegated ruby red and dark green/red burgundy. It is elegant and provides a tremendous amount of beautiful leaves in a short amount of time. However, this plant requires quite a bit of water to thrive. And it is not shy to let you know all about it. Its leaves will start to droop, meaning it is time for you to take care of it.

5. The Ficus Audrey

Lastly, the ficus audrey is a beautiful large plant that can be grown in the home. It does not provide fruit, but it gives off these beautiful fuzzy leaves that can leave you speechless. Compared to the ficus lyrata, the fiddle leaf fig, the audrey is a more pleasant plant. It is effortless to grow, and its succulent-like leaves are also drought tolerant. Once it starts growing, you can expect the plant to explode in size. The ficus audrey tree can be easily pruned and become a statement piece at your home.
